Collective nouns are words that name groups of things, people or animals.

Examples:

  • company
  • family
  • faculty
  • senate
  • team
  • minority
  • majority
  • council
  • class
  • board of directors

 

Collective nouns are especially used when naming groups of animals. However, you need to note that different nouns are used for different groups of animals.

Examples:

  • flock of birds
  • school of fish
  • smack of jellyfish
  • troop of monkeys
  • colony of ants
  • pack of hounds
  • herd of deer
  • swarm of bees
